12. Is your work from home business structure right for your goals?

I spend a few hours each week working as a volunteer business advisor in the City of Auckland, where I live, in New Zealand and much of my time with others who work from home . I often come across an aspect of business which causes dissatisfaction to the owners who find themselves in "the wrong business model!"

As most of us are aware there are Four main ways of business:

1. Hobby Business - Often referred to as work from home or SOHO's

2. Build (or Buy) yourself a job

3. Lifestyle

4. Growth Business

Each is a valid model and all have their purpose! However, we often end up by default in #2 – when what we really wanted #4! Of course this often results inpoor performance and frustration.

In their recent publication - Wednesday, July 23, 2008 Pro Consumer Guide, in their report entitled "Make Money Online Programs - Do They Really Work?" had this to say about ways of making money online which were studied,

"Around 95% of these programs failed our strict testing procedure, and thus were rated as very poor quality. Some of the characteristic features that led to poor quality gradings on all such programs include but are not limited to:

Too little information provided: Whilst the concepts and methods were presented fairly well, there was no further information of practical or instructional value. This left us a little lost.

Poor quality of information: In some cases the program merely consisted of an E-book in PDF format ranging from 50 to 80 pages with an inflated font-size to make the book appear more than what it actually is. The information was poor, confusing and the content had many spelling mistakes and grammatical errors. These were very unprofessional products. And we were surprised that such highly advertised programs could be of such low quality.

Hidden fees and huge upsells: A number of these programs did not disclose that there were further fees for the use of certain resources they offered, and many others offered an "upsell" which is offering you a higher value item at the point of purchase.

No clear privacy or refund policy: Many of the poor quality programs did not offer a clear privacy policy nor a refund policy. We attempted to get refunds for some of the extremely poor programs but were unsuccessful in most cases.

Selling of mentoring programs: Our personal information was used (or passed on to other organizations) and we received a few emails and calls in some instances attempting to sell us expensive mentoring schemes.

Poor customer support: The poor quality programs had support that was not very responsive and in some cases, non-existent. Conclusion

Our tests over a period of 12 weeks proved very disappointing for the most part. The majority of these programs were a waste of time and money, and proved next to useless in the end. With a 95% failure rate in our study it is important that people ensure they join only the highest quality programs since it is very possible to make a reasonable income online. Now this is not an isolated, one-off report. Much of this may be to do with the fact that the average network marketer can’t sell – and will never be able to develop the skills to do so either. (It’s widely accepted now that the average MLM’er will only sign-up 2.4 people during their MLM career) Now what is the difference between buying leads or buying customers, leads are sold by many companies. often they are not even interested in what you are selling, the lead is a result of a survey where applicants have a chance to win a prize such as a car, Television etc.

Whilst such business models have until now been considered to be ‘effective’ for the operating companies, they certainly haven’t proved to be so from the Business Associate’s point of view. Unlike the Ultimate team which works as a cohesive, focussed unit, operating and going about it’s business using state–of–the–art online marketing skills and knowledge to exploit the power and synergy of the’ team’, the average MLM’er, working from home, is saddled with having to do everything, buy, sell and distribute everything in order to keep their ‘head above water’. The new business model is entirely different for two major reasons,

1. Ultimate team driven by Delegation of duties / responsibilities.
2. Preference to BUY Customers instead of the need to “Sell” customers

Point 2 mentioned above is an emergent element to this new business model. For, whilst virtually all existing MLM a/ Network Marketing companies foster a need for their affiliates to find other Business Affiliates and together generate, harvest or BUY leads in order to develop a customer base over time, the Ultimate team Buys Customers instead! This is a profound difference and one which by-passes a difficulty which for most MLM’ers is the single most debilitating aspect of their work from home businesses! Thus, by being able to Buy Customers – instead of leads, they can’t get on with the other aspects of doing business and spending / investing their commission wisely.

Once you understand this aspect of the new business model, you’ll appreciate why the Ultimate team’s approach is so different and vastly superior. But success for the Ultimate team doesn’t just rest there. Another major differentiating factor is the way in which the skills, duties and responsibilities required for the business are Delegated. There’s much less emphasis in Duplication – which is always a distinct requirement for most existing MLM/ Network Marketing business opportunities.

19. Working from home - How important is the Leader in the Ultimate Team ?

You will be aware by now that my introduction to MLM / Network Marketing was extremely disappointing in so many ways (see previous article). But, as I learned from talking to many successful people who’ve been ‘down but not out’ through similar mishaps, if I continued to TRY then chances are I would find the Ultimate Team one day, somehow, somewhere.

So it was that another friend introduced me to his “MLM Guru” friend (with whom he’d shared success in a previous MLM business earlier) and another ‘Rising star’ MLM companies – only 4 years young ,new to new Zealand and Australia, and already a proven performer with an amazing range of ‘scientifically formulated products’.

I liked the fact that it had some substance to it by way of scientific proof / confirmation that the bottles containing the products actually contained what the labels said .Further more, testimonials from those already having remarkable results were very impressive indeed. But what I really liked was a short,20 minute part of the presentation that evening which featured a young Samoan guy who was very knowledgable about health and wellness. In fact I was all but sold after listening to him! All-in-all this was shaping up to look like I had found my Ultimate Team.

You see, what was different this time was not only was the presentation of the business and the products very convincing, the suggestion that I did my own due diligence was stressed emphatically. Now that was different and even some recommended path to discovery was suggested. That’s something which was very good advice indeed because, for the first time in my life, I actually considered matters in a structured way before leaping headlong into something that only ‘sounded too good to miss’.

So it was that I was introduced to a fabulous little book called “How to select a Network Marketing company” by Daren C. Falter. Quite honestly, the best book I have read of its type. Daren (the author) has a passion for detail which quickly breeds confidence. The way he approached the task of selection and the criteria he chose was meaningful and impressive. But of course the most impressive thing was the result of his study for this quite clearly served to show that the company I was about to join was rated Number One best opportunity. (Even 10 years later it is still regarded as the leader ). But what about the teamwork? I asked myself, “Who would be my leader ? Would I be in ‘good company’? How could I be sure I would be amongst the ‘right kind of people?. All the signs of my desire to be member of an Ultimate Team again I guess.

To cut a long story short – so to speak, I joined up after attending Three presentations. I wanted to be in quick – so I could benefit from a high position in a Binary system which appeared to be “The best thing since sliced bread”! But guess what – soon after I discovered I was once again the victim of skull-duggery once again!

How was this?

Well it transpired that, my upline insisted on placing prospect ‘A’- who couldn’t or wouldn’t make a quick- decision directly above me. Turned out he’d asked prospect ‘A’ plus friends a few weeks before without result. Then, along with the “Guru” above him, used heavy tactics and the promise that “prospect ‘A’ plus 2 friends could still be placed above me” (because they’d heard about it first!).
I didn’t learn about this of course until a few weeks later after I joined up! I went ballistic! But none of that helped. I had to go it alone, build my own business and my own Ultimate Team. But that was not the end – not by a long way.You see what happened in the following months and years made me depair even further.

First realisation was that, whilst I was making steady progress recruiting and selling the business, all of the people above me (Prospect A plus friends) did absolutely no business at all! But it was several years before I learned the hardest lesson – why I had never received ‘gift’ members from upline. You see, as predicted, the “Guru MLMer” and wife were building” strong and deep”. They structured their business so it looked after all their family members and friends. They enjoyed massive growth – but none of it came our way. I couldn’t figure it out at first but eventually I did.

A Hard Lesson about Binary Systems.
The discovery (by continued observation) was, that Mr MLM “Guru” was focussing on his two ‘outside legs’ to the exclusion of his ‘inside legs’. But it got worse than that. You see, being at the top of the business, he could spot the newcomers- especially the new, eager performers. Then, as the “Guru” received bonus business centres, they would quickly be placed underneath the newcomers thus ensuring the “Guru” and wife were always maximising their business – at the expense of their ‘Team’!

It took approximately four years of this exponential growth before others noticed and the “Gurus” strategy started to collapse. He lost many good, dependable , hard-working people during that time. One by one they opted out or were driven out by the “Guru’s” lack of consideration and a distinct absence of concern for wanting to fuse everybody into an Ultimate Team. As for me and my upline, whilst I have continued to enjoy a reasonable business for 10 years,but it’s been hard work. I haven’t lost – for I have gained knowledge and know-how which will no doubt help me forge my own Ultimate Team one day soon. But the question now is “Is there still time?” the answer my friends is “Most definitely” and here’s why…..

As if by some magical work by the hand of God, I feel I have moved full-circle.
First there was the re-unification with veretekk. Then, after almost two years in Veretekk, developing my online marketing capability, I learned how Tom Prendergast- CEO of Veretekk- had for the past 6 years been funding the growth of Veretekk via another MLM company in which he very successful applying the very stuff he was teaching me and countless others in Veretekk!

Just before Christmas 2007 Tom announced to a few Veretekk members that, after 12 years of non-stop dedication to the task of building Veretekk (without ever actually marketing it) he was now about to begin marketing in earnest. He was about to do this by creating a team – an Ultimate Team- which would take the knowledge gained from within Veretekk and apply it whole-heartedly to building his MLM business. He extended an invitation and I jumped – I knew this man had the very best kind of leadership qualities and his idea was unique.

And so, in the early part of 2008, Tom’s Ultimate Team began taking shape.Growth was and still is – exponential and people are astounded with the results – including the MLM company involved.

As for me, there was more disappointment for the MLM company was not open to ‘outsiders’- serving USA and Canada only. But Tom agreed to permit me attend the conference meetings – so I could learn . it wasn’t too long before another person – outside the USA- discovered a way in which I could participate. 20. lead generation Traffic portals make the Ultimate Team different

What makes the Ultimate Team so different? Continued…

Despite the fact that my introduction to MLM / Network Marketing was so disappointing, (see previous article), I wasn’t deterred from trying again for my appetite had been wetted and still I believed I might be lucky enough to discover the Ultimate Team one day, somehow, somewhere.

So I turned to the Internet – something that – in 1998 -was quite new to the average “Joe Blow”.

I soon realised how little I knew about computers and the internet but it didn’t stop me from LOOKING! Like so many others since, I was easy fodder for the marketing ‘Gurus’ easily succumbed by their golden words and lavish promises of golden fortunes. All I had to do it seemed was to “Click Here” …and all would be revealed. In my imagination, I would then become a member of the Ultimate Team, journeying along the ‘yellow-brick road’ to fortune untold! I wasted what little money I had and soon was broke – again!

What is it that makes an otherwise normal, level-headed man of 50 years, with wide experience in life and business, suddenly capitulate and give in to such trickery? I wondered. After 10 years of such experiences only now do I feel better qualified to comment.

But subsequently, during several other ‘brushes with the magic words’ I came across two worth mentioning. Each had a message for me. The first experience was discovering Veretekk at that time in its infancy. It looked very interesting and absorbing. I truly felt that in my mind, this was the Ultimate Team opportunity and the path I should take. But suffering as I was from loss of job, marriage break-up and general despondency I felt it was all beyond. It was easier to ‘let go’! (eight years later I returned to Veretekk, joined and began marketing with a vengeance. I consider it now to be “my other partner”)

The second experience was quite different and served to leave me with a bitter and everlasting experience. The business? It was SFI – Six Figure Income. I t was affordable (I thought) easy to do and gave me the opportunity to build my own Ultimate Team. I put plenty of effort into SFI (as you do!) and started watching my downline grow. As I recall It was a ‘Tap-root’ system. It flourished and within a couple of months I was already receiving Cheques (or ‘checks’ for my brothers and sisters in the USA / Canada). I felt confident that the grwth of my Ultimate Team was almost ‘viral’ (a new term I had learned from Tom Prendergast of Veretekk) and I was about to have my dreams unfold before me.

So confident was I that I now started to recommend to other businessmen I knew. I was reticent to do this earlier as I live in a small country (only 4 million) of which 1 million are in my city. I had learnt many years ago, not to ‘talk too loud about things you couldn’t be certain of’ – lest they prove to be untrue! In those circumstances (perhaps you have the same experience) when things DO go wrong, I knew the finger would point at me – for I was the one who made the recommendation to join this Ultimate Team.

Then it happened! Just when a respected colleague was also beginning to receive cheques in the mail from our golden –egg, SFI announced that it was “Changing the compensation plan”. I couldn’t believe it! How dare they? My lifeline was taken away. My regular cheques-in-the-mail just stopped –overnight! Everything came to an abrupt end. Once again the Ultimate Team I thought I had was gone! It didn’t tke long to figure that the Big Hitters at the top were getting greedy. Whilst they loved the idea of TEAMWORK which generated millions of ‘slaves’ below them developing THEIR downline, they didn’t like the idea of those people being paid as well as themselves! No, indeed, their idea of the Ultimate Team was clearly quite different and one where only they could prosper most.

Naturally, I have never forgotten this last experience. For I am at heart like most normal people on this planet, trusting of my fellow man – that is until something goes wrong and more so , when I am the one who suffers. For some time after this I was bitter and angry with everything – especially the Internet. So I pursued other options. Now, if you believe (as I now do)- that

“Something good comes out of everything and something good is going to happen to me today”

you’ll understand that my disappointment lasted for sometime but, I’m happy to say, I didn’t let it get me down.

You see the good news is, that I returned to Veretekk years later with a commitment to learn how to market online correctly – for that was one positive experience I had online. So Veretekk became ahs become a passion of mine – like so many others. It is a different kind of Ultimate Team wherein people join forces to learn and fend for themselves and I have been able to get a different perspective on what is not and moreover, what Is Good Business!

So it is then, that I have come full circle. After several years in the wilderness, through veretekk and it’s relationship with Its Good Business I have discovered and become a member of the Ultimate Team.

Is this a good thing? Absolutely!

Why called the Ultimate Team? Well here’s what I think about that…

A team – any team , is only as good as the sum of all its parts – its members. Believe me, in the past 35 years I have worked with many teams and have learnt much about the dynamics and attributes of different teams. Not all teams are deserving of the term Ultimate Team. It has to be earned and proven over time. What makes the Ultimate Team so different when working from home?

If you’re reading this article then the chances are you are at least doing something right! How do I know that? Well, as a member of the Ultimate Team I learnt what to do in order to get my business noticed on the Internet, and you, by chance or design have learnt how and where to find quality advice on the Internet!
How I wish, that when I first learnt about network / MLM Marketing someone could have introduced me to a concept such as the Ultimate Team. Not only would I now be comfortably retired and very wealthy, I would have missed out on a lot of heart-ache and misery.

Now I appreciate that if you’re new to MLM / Network Marketing, you’ll be wondering “What’s he talking about?”. However if you’ve ‘been through the Mill’ – you’ll understand just what I mean because you too would have dreamed about working from home and being involved in an Ultimate Team that never eventuated.

So let me explain my comment and perspective. You see I once was interviewed by a top performer in MLM – I’ll call him ”George” for now. I had answered an ad in the local newspaper and was presenting myself for an interview. It was a good experience because I felt I was about to become a member of his team – an Ultimate Team by the sound of things!

His presentation was professional and as an experienced middle-management executive I was impressed. He talked about making money in a BIG way, expansion into the Asian markets and so on. He even invited me to drink some special, herbal tea (one of the MLM products he represented) saying, ”Here, try this – this is what makes our Ultimate Team business so successful”! Naturally, I tried it. It tasted horrible and I said so!

What happened then was he looked me straight in the eyes- from a distance of about 250mm and said, ”You didn’t hear me correctly; this tea taste’s wonderful; this is what makes our Ultimate Team business so successful”! and went on to tell me that I should drink this tea every day and especially whenever I interview someone for a position in the Ultimate Team.

Now I don’t give in to such ‘brow-beating’ but on this occasion- and because I felt I was in the presence of a MLM ‘Guru’ who knew how to ‘walk-the-walk, talk –the-talk and do the business’, I should take notice, listen –up and get involved .That’s what I did.

It cost me over $6,000 to join – most of which was stock and because I couldn’t afford to be out of pocket that much I embarked on a campaign to sell that stock to get my money back asap. I did this in 35 days and was very pleased with myself.But then I was good at lead generation sales anyway. Then I realised, I had joined this business and the Ultimate Team to emulate the ’Guru’. I should be hiring people like he was and duplicating what he does. So I started going to the training.

I learned a shocking truth at my first training, something that eventually was a major cause to me leaving that business. What I learned was after being signed-up by the ‘Guru’ I was placed in the matrix of the downline – without any discussion- below a woman I didn’t know. Even worse, I was so shocked when I met her and found her manner to be so impolite. It was a complete turn-off for me. I disliked so intensely that I always felt uncomfortable in her presence. So much I thought for being a part of her team.

I never felt comfortable after that and when I remonstrated – trying to get transferred to a position under the ‘Guru’ who I agreed to join the business with my words fell on deaf ears. I was locked into a business that I didn’t like and I wasn’t being very successful.

Team work, I discovered, meant being in the same room as other business members on Tuesdays, Thursday evenings and Saturdays mornings for sales presentations where people I invited would get to learn about my the business opportunity and hopefully be suitably excited by the ‘hype’ enough to sign-up.

This was a business of working leads , telephone calls, making one-to-one presentations, buying at wholesale – selling at retail , driving my car all over town delivering product to people who often wouldn’t front-up with money when they placed their order with me and many of whom hesitated or pleaded poverty when I finally presented them with the products!

Does this Sound familiar?

Certainly , this was not my idea of an Ultimate Team at work so I decided after 9 months and a lot of wasted time and effort to move on and start working from home using my lead generating software.

Now finally, after 15 years and many other experiences with similar results I’ve found what I and others genuinely believe to be our Ultimate Team.

The difference this time is we many members with similar backgrounds, learning paths and experiences. We know the ‘turn-offs’ the pitfalls of MLM/ Network Marketing and how to avoid them. We’re all familiar with how to share with others, support, co-opt, train others, give without expecting something in return, work alongside different team-members when required, contribute – even when unsolicited – for the common good of the team. We know there’s no ‘get-rich-quick’ path but there is a work ethic and solidarity that will ensure everyone can be rich working to the same goal.

In thisUltimate Team there’s a motto many of you will be familiar with it goes like this, ”All for one and one for all”. There’s camaraderie – like brothers in arms “no one gets left behind” prevails. This team, unlike others I have experienced is invigorating. I look forward to each day – I concern myself with getting my team tasks done knowing that others are doing the same and all the while, our Ultimate Team ‘s process ensures that “T.E.A.M.” (Together Everyone Achieves More) really works.

The result in most cases is resounding Failure!

Why is this? Why doesn't it work? Along with this you start hearing words like synergy, teamwork, upline, downline, group volume, retail volume etc. and you can be forgiven for feeling that you’re about to commit yourself, your money and your time, to a well-oiled machine driven by some mysterious team that is simply unstoppable! All of which seems to suggest to your unconscious mind that this business is so good you can’t fail!

But Fail they do!

In fact it’s commonly accepted now that around 95% of businesses Working from home fail.

So why is this? Why is the dream of becoming a member of an Ultimate Team so elusive to most of us?

I made comment recently about the wonderful experience I once had as member of what many of my peers considered to be the Ultimate Team. It concerned a Rugby-football I was member of during high school, a team which enjoyed –over a period of four years- wonderful success resulting in an unblemished record and the envy of schools for miles around.

At that time if my life, like many people my age, I realised that being member of a team was very enjoyable when winning but not so much fun when losing! I never thought that years later I would be encouraging and facilitating teams in industry - a totally different arena yet a place where teams and team behaviour was every bit the same. Nor did I think I would be involved with another Ultimate Team in my lifetime – but now, years on, I recall involvement with several such teams which exhibited similar qualities to the Ultimate Team I knew back in 1950’s

Wickipedia describes a team as being:

“comprises a group of people or animals linked in a common purpose. Teams are especially appropriate for conducting tasks that are high in complexity and have many interdependent subtasks. A group in itself does not necessarily constitute a team. Teams normally have members with complementary skills and generate synergy through a coordinated effort which allows each member to maximize his or her strengths and minimize his or her weaknesses. Thus teams of sports players can form (and re-form) to practice their craft. Transport logistics executives can select teams of horses, dogs or oxen for the purpose of conveying goods.”

Theorists in business in the late 20th century popularized the concept of building teams. There was a considerable resurgence in modern business during the 1990-early 2000’s.

Some see "team" as a word that’s: overused and under-useful. Others see it as a panacea that finally realizes the human relations movement’s desire to integrate what that movement perceives as best for workers and as best for managers. Still others believe in the effectiveness of teams, but also see them as dangerous because of the potential for exploiting workers — in that team effectiveness can rely on peer -pressure and peer surveillance.

Teams may be compared also with the more structured concept of ‘crews’ which are generally focussed around specific skills and tasks, and the advantages of formal and informal partnerships. Team members normally have different roles, like team leader and agents. Large teams can divide into sub-teams according to need. Many teams go through a life-cycle of stages, identified by Bruce Tuckman as: forming, storming, norming, and performing adjourning- more often referred to as “forming, storming, norming and performing” .The latter stage ‘performing’ is where teams begin to reach their potential but very few ever reaching the status of becoming an Ultimate Team

Virtual Teams

Developments in communications technologies have seen the emergence of the virtual work team. A virtual team is a group of people who work interdependently and with shared purpose across space, time, and organisation boundaries using technology to communicate and collaborate.

Virtual team members can be located across a country or across the world, rarely meet face-to-face, and include members from different cultures. Many virtual teams are cross-functional and emphasise solving customer problems or generating new work processes. The United States Labour Department reported that in 2001, 19 million people worked from home online or from another location, (Pearlson & Sounders, 2001).

The team that I recently became a member of calls itself the Ultimate Team and has been born from such a structure. It’s totally Internet based with members from many parts of the world.

I imagine that most virtual teams – such as our Ultimate Team are self-managed in much the same way. Participants recognising the need to work for the common good avail themselves and their skills where they perceive them to fit best. This is a very powerful and highly motivating factor and something worth appreciating. Throughout industry and commerce it’s been my experience that teams which have been constructed by management often fail dismally for lack of motivation for the members. Often there’s a perception that management who develop teams do it for the company’s benefit whilst the team has to be satisfied with a reward system that is usually insignificant and often has a de-motivating effect. Dissention follows, teamwork suffers and performance suffers.

In a traditional management role, the manager is responsible for providing instruction, conducting communication, developing plans, giving orders, and disciplining and rewarding employees, and making decisions by virtue of his or her position. In this organizational model, the manager delegates specific responsibility and decision-making authority to the team itself, in the hope that the group will make better decisions than any individual. Neither a manager nor the team leader make independent decisions in the delegated responsibility area.

The main idea of the self-managed team is that the leader does not operate with positional authority. In this environment, the team has to deal with time and space and geographical distances – lacking the ability to even meet each other face to face!
Imagine, joining a business venture one minute then suddenly finding yourself having to work people you don’t know, can’t see, can only communication verbally – or more often via text. On top of this, having to learn the systems – even develop the systems “as you go” , learn new skills, share hard-earned knowledge with strangers and much more.
It really is a shake-up to the normal work experiences of most people.
